Equipment

Method

Cooking Steps
  1. Heat the Skillet: Begin by heating 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add 3 cloves of minced garlic and 1 finely chopped shallot. Sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant and lightly golden.
  2. Cook the Beef: Add 1 pound of ground beef to the skillet. Break it apart as it browns, cooking for about 4-5 minutes until no pink spots remain.
  3. Add Flavorful Ingredients: Stir in 2 tablespoons of soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of oyster sauce, 1 teaspoon of brown sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon of chili flakes. Let the mixture simmer for 2-3 minutes.
  4. Finish with Fresh Ingredients: Remove from heat and mix in 1 tablespoon of fresh lime juice and 1 cup of chopped Thai basil leaves. Allow to cool slightly.
  5. Prepare the Rice Paper: Soak each rice paper wrapper in warm water for 5-10 seconds. Lay the wrapper flat on a damp towel.
  6. Fill the Wraps: Place a small amount of the beef filling and optional veggies at the bottom third of the rice paper.
  7. Roll It Up: Fold the bottom of the wrapper over the filling, tucking in the sides as you roll tightly but gently.
  8. Complete the Rolls: Repeat the process with the remaining wrappers and filling. Slice each roll in half and keep covered with a damp towel.

Notes

For optimal freshness, assemble the rolls just before serving. Lightly pan-frying or baking the rolls adds a crispy texture.
