Ingredients

For the Chai Base
  • 2 cups Water Acts as the foundation for brewing your chai; no substitutions needed.
  • 1 cup Milk Whole milk is preferred, but almond or oat milk makes a great dairy-free option.
  • 2 teaspoons Black Tea (Assam or Darjeeling) Infuses robust flavor; choose strong black tea for the best result.
  • 2 tablespoons Brown Sugar Adjust to your liking for the perfect balance.
For the Spice Mix
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon Freshly ground is ideal for a stronger flavor.
  • 1/2 teaspoon Ground Cloves Using fresh spice enhances the chai.
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Ginger Fresher ginger adds complexity to the mix.
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cardamom Fresh ground yields vibrant flavor.
  • 1/4 teaspoon Ground Nutmeg Use sparingly, as it can easily overpower.
  • 1/4 teaspoon Ground Black Pepper Adjust according to taste.
For the Whipped Cream Topping
  • 1 cup Heavy Cream Essential for a rich, fluffy whipped cream topping.
  • 1 tablespoon Honey Adjust based on your sweetness preference.

Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Fine-mesh strainer

Method

Step‑by‑Step Instructions
  1. In a small bowl, combine ground cinnamon, cloves, ginger, cardamom, nutmeg, and black pepper. Reserve 1/4 teaspoon for whipped cream later.
  2. In a medium saucepan, pour in 2 cups of water and add your black tea, brown sugar, and the remaining spice mix. Heat over medium until simmering, about 5 minutes.
  3. Reduce heat to low and stir in 1 cup of milk, and let steep for 5 minutes.
  4. Use a fine-mesh strainer to remove tea leaves and strained spices, pouring chai base into your mug.
  5. In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of heavy cream, a tablespoon of honey, and reserved spice mix. Whisk until soft peaks form, about 3-5 minutes.
  6. Spoon whipped cream onto the chai latte and sprinkle with cinnamon or nutmeg.

Notes

Using freshly ground spices will elevate the flavor. Be careful not to over-steep the black tea. Whole milk adds creaminess, but dairy-free options are available. Adjust sweetness to preference.
